Dominican Republic 2011 was our inaugural project. The Macdonald High School Leadership Class of 2011 had wanted to do accomplish something bigger than themselves. What had started as conversations about fund raising for a school, or homes evolved into an unforgettable exercise of empowerment. We had decided to take on a building project ourselves. The class wanted to continue the school's traditions of putting on Talent Shows, Fashion Shows, bake sales, but this time with a different focus. Our energies would be focussed on raising enough money to travel to an underprivileged community and providing a home for a needy family.
Initially, many students had signed up. However, due to the cost of the trip ($2400 per student), only 6 students, with the support of the rest of the class, were able to see the project through. As part of Live Different's Hero Holiday program, we travelled to Agua Negra, Dominican Republic. Along with other teens across Canada, we were able to build and furnish a home for an incredible family of three. Please have a look at our video below.
